Workshop, paper writing and presentations
P1 Green AI Workshop
On May 8th I attended a Green AI Workshop at the University of Copenhagen and it was a great experience. I got to talk to people working on similar of adjacent areas. I even got to bring and present a poster for the first time. It was my work on layer pruning the Whisper encoder which I brought to get some low-stakes feedback on the overall idea. Nobody tore it completely apart so we ended up deciding to write it up as an extended abstract for a workshop.
There was a keynote titled Deaths Per Token: A Health-Impact Unit for Generative AI Infrastructure which I found a little provocative at first but was presented in a very reasonable way. It basically told the story of how cleanliness in the energy-grid is the biggest factor for responsible and clean AI in terms of pollution. Makes sense but seeing it being quantified in this way “Deaths Per Token” brought up an almost emotional reaction that I didn’t anticipate.
The workshop took place on a friday which coincidentally aligned with the KU Festival. Future workshops will have a hard time to match the after party.
Writing up a paper
After presenting the poster we decided that it could be nice to properly wrap up the project by transforming it into a paper. My supervisor sent me a link to a workshop that had a reasonable fit and accepted 4 page extended abstract which I thought was realistic given the deadline and scope of the project. We ended up submitting to the 4th International Workshop on Generalizing from Limited Resources in the Open World at International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI) 2026.
Working elsewhere
For two weeks I had to find alternative places to work due to cable work in the office. I took this as an opportunity to be a bit more present at the university but also explore other options. A favorite of mine was to go to my local bouldering gym and working from there and climbing during my lunch break. I could see myself doing that more often during regular WFH days.
I also took the chance of inviting myself out to the Pioneer Centre for AI, located in the Botanical Gardens in Copenhagen, where I’m affiliated due to my PhD. It was very nice to feel welcome and get an access card to the building. I don’t know how much I’ll be using it but having the option is great.
Presenting at IDA Driving AI
I presented at IDA’s Driving AI conference! Recording of the presentation can be found here :)
Part of the job as a PhD student is dissemination of the work or knowledge that you build up. A previous version of myself would have absolutely dreaded presenting something like. However, having been in the audience for quite a few years at this point I must admit that the idea of being the presenter grew on me. And it was a really good experience! The presentation itself was way faster than I had anticipated and practiced. No idea what I did differently but I guess that’s something for next time. Because there will definitely be a next time for this conference :)
Local AI CPH Meetup
In early april I hosted the first On-device AI CPH Meetup. I didn’t really know what to expect but it ended up being a really nice experience to gather people interested in those topics. Immediately after the presentations at the meetup I was asked when the next one would be to which my answer was “Honestly I have no idea.” because I hadn’t planned for this to be a recurring thing. It was just a one-off experiment to take the temperature.
I was lucky to have Asbjørn from NobodyWho.ooo present at the meetup in april and he later asked if we should do another rendition. And of course we should. He ended up planning and executing the whole thing, having contacts at the Footprint Firm we ended up using their amazing offices as the meetup venue.
Course work
While it isn’t all that exciting to talk about I think it’s important to note that I’m also spending some time on course work. Notably this month was two full days of the DTU Compute PhD Seminar workshops which concluded the course. I’m now 2.5 ECTS richer. Not only that, I passed the Industrial PhD Course from Innovation Fund Denmark, corresponding to 5 ECTS.
